Benefits of Oncology Massage

What to Expect in an Oncology Massage

Prior to your appointment, please complete our intake form.

Timing

If you are currently receiving chemotherapy and radiation, it's best to book your massage at least a day after any treatments.

Pressure

Many medications used for cancer treatment have an increased risk for bruising and may cause loss of bone density. As a result, Oncology Massage is typically a very light to light pressure massage. After the first session of a lighter massage, the pressure can be increased slightly in following sessions if the client noticed no ill effects. However, the pressure will never be considered deep nor go above a moderate pressure. As different medications cause different side effects, each session will need to be modified to ensure comfort and safety.

Comfort

For clients with ports in place, a small pillowcase will be provided to relieve pressure while face down. Typically massage is performed flat on stomach and then flat on back. If either position isn't comfortable; there is a wedge pillow for reclined laying and/or body pillows for side-lying. Clients should make the therapist aware of any areas to avoid before the massage; such as nails, scalp, surgical sites or other sensitive areas.
